3 Ways To Protect Your Mind

Racial tension. Coronavirus. Political upheaval. Civil unrest. The exposure of corruption on many levels and in various arenas. These are the topics that are looming like dark clouds over us daily. We are constantly being infiltrated and bombarded by negativity and sometimes it seems that no matter where we turn, more bad news is right there waiting.

As a Christian I’ve grown to truly understand how critical it is to build a fortress around my mind.

In recent months, I have found myself desiring refuge from this onslaught of information. As a Christian I’ve grown to truly understand how critical it is to build a fortress around my mind. The mind is the place where you either win battles or lose battles. It is ground zero. This is why the Word of God places such emphasis on the importance of renewing our minds. Romans 12:2 (NIV) tells us, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing, and perfect will.” We have not only the responsibility to renew our minds, but also to protect them. We must be willing to do whatever it takes to learn to focus our thoughts on only that which allows us to live in obedience and surrender to God.

Here are three (3) things that are vital in the fight to protect our minds. It all starts with prayer. Colossians 4:2 tells us “Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.” Prayer is communication with God, and yes, it is a two way street. Maintaining open communication with Him positions us to receive His guidance, His wisdom, His perspective. When we devote ourselves to a lifestyle of communication with God, we experience the infinite benefits of Him being an active participant in our lives.

When we intentionally focus on His presence, amazing things take place in us. Our impossibilities are met with His power.

It also takes His presence. When is the last time you experienced just simply being in God’s presence? Let’s not include ministry work, or the prayers when you give Him your to do list. I’m talking about intentional time with just you and your Creator. When we intentionally focus on His presence, amazing things take place in us. Our impossibilities are met with His power. Our limitations are met with His endless ability. Our desires are met with His purification. Our weariness is met with His strength. Nothing compares to time in God’s presence. This time with Him will fortify your mind in ways we could never do on our own.

Last but certainly not least, it takes a commitment to purity in order to protect our thinking. What we allow ourselves to listen to and what we allow ourselves to look at, truly matter. The conversations we hold and entertain, the places we allow our feet to walk, the accounts we follow on social media, the articles or books we read…all affect our commitment to purity. Here is wisdom from the psalmist, “How can a young person live a pure life? By obeying your word.” Psalm 119:9 ERV

How can a young person live a pure life? By obeying your word.

Now more than ever, let’s be people who steward our minds properly. Let’s be people who are diligent, intentional, and protective of our thoughts. Let’s be people who are given to prayer, passionate about God’s presence, and committed to purity. This is where you will find refuge.
